ValMaSci exemplifies best practices with SDO Sorsogon

Taking a major step towards better education through best practices, representatives from the Schools Division Office (SDO) Sorsogon visited Valenzuela City of Mathematics and Science last Wednesday, May 8, 2024, for a learning exchange activity with esteemed school leaders.

Led by senior high school department focal person Mr. Michael James Darilag, teachers at ValMaSci warmly welcomed school heads and officials from Sorsogon City to engage in "Project REAL 2.0 - Strategic Exchange: Mechanisms of Leadership Formation for School Leaders of Sorsogon City."

SDO Sorsogon Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Jose Doncillo, Public Schools District Supervisor Dr. Sofia SD. Quilbio and other SDO Sorsogon officials collaborated with the Department of Education (DepEd) SDO Valenzuela City and ValMaSci School Head Mr. Jaime S. De Vera Jr. to facilitate the collaborative activity.

As outlined in Regional Letter 089 series of 2024 by Department of Education - National Capital Region (DepEd NCR) director Dr. Jocelyn Andaya, the benchmarking activity is designed to facilitate participant interaction with teachers regarding "effective instructional practices" and "innovations" essential for enhancing school learning outcomes.

Mrs. Maria Cecilia Atok, Master Teacher I in English, took the lead in hosting the program, followed by presentations from Ms. Maria Teresa Atanacio, Mr. Augusto Logronio, and Mrs. Mary Ann Dayrit, who each showcased the curricular and co-curricular programs and activities of ValMaSci, highlighting subjects featured in Science, Mathematics, and the Senior High School Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand.

Following the program, officials from SDO Sorsogon City explored various learning facilities within ValMaSci, including the school library, science laboratories, speech laboratory, mathematics laboratory, and computer laboratory.

Inside the math lab

Master Teacher III Dioscorro “Josh” Lumogdang III, in charge of leading the discussion on using ValMaSci’s Mathematics Laboratory, highlighted the significance of Geogebra as a "powerful" suite of tools for enhancing mathematics learning.

“I introduced that the Math Lab is used by math teachers during Quarterly Learning Action Cell (LAC) for classroom observations, conducting E-Prime and I-Prime, for classroom discussion that involves collaborative learning, for the training of students participating in math competitions,” Mr. Lumgdang said in a statement.

The SHS calculus teacher further elaborated on the mathematics laboratory, describing it as a house for an array of tools including the abacus, Rubik’s cubes, tablets, ping-pong balls, Damath boards, protractors, compasses, graphing boards, lecture boards, and smartboards.

“I also demonstrated the use of GeoGebra as one of the application software na ginagamit ng teachers in teaching mathematics, especially in observing the behavior of the graphs. I emphasized that GeoGebra is a powerful collection of tools that allows students to visualize and manipulate math,” highlighted Mr. Lumogdang.

Pursuing robotics

Grade 9 Science Teacher Mrs. Marjorie Del Rosario also facilitated a tour inside the Science Laboratories, featuring a robotics demonstration by her students Glianne Betis and Shinna Bernadino.
