ValMaSci exemplifies fire preparedness through training, fire simulation

In order to prepare for emergency situations, Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science (VCSMS) conducted a fire preparedness training session and fire simulation this afternoon, October 8, 2024.

Led by School Principal Jaime S. De Vera Jr., School Engineer Daniel Nichollo Barlaan, and Senior High School Focal Person Michael James Darilag, the event took place from 2:00 PM onwards in the school’s speech laboratory and quadrangle.

Citing an incident wherein VCSMS students way back in 2018 were at risk of causing a fire due to a lack of awareness in operating a fire extinguisher, Filipino Head Teacher Ms. Rowena Francisco expressed how fire preparedness training is crucial for students to avoid possible fire incidents.

During the training session, students recalled the classes of fire, parts of a fire extinguisher, and the steps to operate a fire extinguisher in the form of a short discussion.

After the lesson, students operated a fire extinguisher, where they simulated a real-life scenario of a fire incident, and used the key principles of TPASS—twist the pin and pull, aim at the base of the fire, squeeze the nozzle, and sweep the nozzle until the fire is extinguished.

Engr. Barlaan and Mr. Darilag also gave pointers to students after they each tried using a fire extinguisher.

“‘Masaya yung event kasi nakasubok kami gumamit ng fire extinguisher tapos naalala pa namin yung basic principles”, one of the students said.
